Consumer Brand Growth Consultants

Every brand has a story. For Julian Nelmes, that story begins in the early 1990s, a young creative from New Milton, Hampshire, with an instinct for design and a belief that powerful ideas can move people, shape perception and drive growth.
After being accepted into the prestigious Shelley Park Art College at just sixteen, Julian’s creative journey quickly gathered momentum. He earned a National Diploma in Art & Design, followed by a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design from Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design. His dedication to typography, concept development and visual communication led to exhibitions at London’s prestigious Mall Galleries before graduating with a BA (Hons) in Design from the University of Wales, College Newport.
Recognised early on by his mentor, the renowned designer Tim Foster, as “something different”, Julian also achieved the International Society of Typographic Designers (iSTD) Award in 1996, a mark of creative excellence that laid the foundations for a career built not simply on aesthetics, but on ideas with genuine commercial impact.
The First Chapter; Selling Ideas
Soon after, Julian joined his first design agency, Selling Ideas, in the mid 1990s. It was a vibrant and fast moving creative studio where his conceptual thinking and natural ability quickly stood out. But it was also where he experienced one of the defining moments of his career.
Having been approached by another agency, a moment of youthful naivety saw him printing his CV in the office. He was caught, called into the directors’ room and dismissed immediately. Their final words were sharp and absolute: “You’ll never make it in the design world.”
It was a painful lesson, but one that ignited a determination that would shape the next three decades of his career. Rather than proving them right, Julian became driven by a deeper ambition to understand not only how brands look, but how they grow, connect, evolve and endure.
Building Brands That Move People
Over the following years, Julian refined his craft within leading agencies, working across nationally recognised consumer brands including Coca Cola, Malibu, B&Q, Max Factor, Baby Organix, Boddingtons, Ruddles Smooth and Panda Pops.
His strength quickly became more than design execution. It was strategic thinking, consumer understanding and the ability to turn insight into commercially effective creative ideas. His work helped shape campaigns that would stand the test of time, including the original concepts behind Diet Coke Break and the memorable slogan “Thirsty?”.
He also played a key role in establishing the branding for Triple Eight Racing, led by Derek Warwick, which would later become the most successful team in British Touring Car Championship history.
These experiences fundamentally shaped Julian’s philosophy that branding is not decoration. The most successful consumer brands are built on emotional connection, cultural relevance, clarity of positioning and the ability to evolve ahead of the market.
Facelift Design; A New Beginning
In 1999, after years of agency experience and major brand development, Julian founded Facelift Design, a studio built around creativity, authenticity, strategic thinking and measurable results.
What began as a one man operation quickly gained momentum. Within its first year, Facelift Design secured what had once been Selling Ideas’ largest client, a moment that felt both defining and symbolic. It was not simply a business win, it represented the transformation of rejection into resilience and experience into opportunity.
Soon after, Julian earned professional accreditation as MCSD, Member of the Chartered Society of Designers, and Facelift Design evolved into a respected creative consultancy serving businesses across the UK.
The studio became recognised not only for strong creative work, but for identifying opportunities clients themselves had not yet seen. Julian’s collaborative and highly visual process allowed brands to explore ideas in real time, combining strategic thinking, consumer insight and creative direction to produce work that did not simply look good, but delivered growth.
Over time, his reputation evolved beyond designer to trusted creative advisor, helping businesses modernise, reposition, launch products, refine customer perception and navigate changing consumer behaviour.
The Full Circle; Reclaiming Selling Ideas
Today, more than 25 years later, the story comes full circle.
The original Selling Ideas agency no longer exists, but Julian now owns the Selling Ideas® trademark and the highly valuable SellingIdeas.com domain, transforming what was once a painful setback into a symbol of evolution, resilience and reinvention.
Under Julian’s leadership, Selling Ideas has been reborn not as a traditional design agency, but as a modern Consumer Brand Growth Agency built for businesses navigating a rapidly changing commercial landscape.
In a world where AI is reshaping production, marketing is increasingly automated and businesses are overwhelmed by constant change, Selling Ideas exists to provide something far more valuable: clarity, foresight, strategic creativity and commercially intelligent brand evolution.
Today, Selling Ideas works with consumer brands to identify growth opportunities, uncover areas of market weakness, strengthen positioning, modernise perception and create commercially effective creative systems that help businesses evolve with confidence.
The focus is not simply on producing design, but on helping brands remain relevant, competitive and emotionally connected to the audiences they serve.
The Philosophy
With a career spanning more than three decades, Julian’s work has always centred on one core belief: strong brands are built by understanding people. His strength lies not only in creativity, but in identifying emotional drivers, market opportunities, consumer trends and areas of untapped growth before they become obvious.
By combining strategic insight with creative execution, Selling Ideas bridges the gap between business ambition and consumer engagement, helping brands adapt, grow and communicate with greater clarity in an increasingly competitive world.
Julian’s clients describe him as genuine, visionary and refreshingly direct. His collaborative process encourages clarity, momentum and creativity in equal measure, producing work that not only captures attention, but delivers meaningful commercial impact.
